Eden Log
The movie news website darkhorizons
put out a movies to look for in '09 list. There was an interesting
pattern of dark sci-fi films, many coming from other countries.
This French film gets here first. A man awakens without memory in a
deep cave and wanders around mazelike tunnels with digital phantoms
learning about the community of 'eden log'.
Passengers
I really got into Writer/Director Rodrigo Garcia's last film, Nine Lives. A man known for subtle visuals and emotionally intense scripts now delivers a movie with Anne Hathaway as a grief counselor working with plane crash survivors who start to go missing. I'm not sure what to make of it yet, so I'll give it a shot.
Under the Bombs
The film was shot entirely on location in 2006, in the middle of the ruins of war-torn Lebanon. The director only hired two professional actors, the rest are real refugees, journalists, soldiers playing themselves. A christian taxi driver takes an untraditional Shiite woman from Beirut to scour the rubble of local towns for her son. Winner of the Human Rights Film Award at the Venice International Film Festival
Wendy and Lucy
What I know about this film is that it's FLOORING movie critics. It is hailed as a step toward what they are calling a new american realism. The acting turn is being singled out as well. A girl and her dog get stranded in a small town due to car trouble, and try to survive together without money or friends in a strange town.
