16 year old Ryna is the daughter of a poor Romanian who runs a gas station in a small community in the Danube delta. Ryna has been brought up like a boy because her father had longed for a son. The film is about strong family ties, about a daughter's search for her mother, and about a despotic father slowly losing his grip. But, it is also about poverty, social suppression and the abuse of power by those who rule under the guise of a false freedom. Ryna shows the awakening of a young girl's soul and the pain that goes with it. Lucky # Slevin
Ben Kingsley as a gangster called 'the rabbi'. That's all it takes for me. Morgan Freeman as the opposing crime boss, and Bruce Willis as a hitman, I'm sold.
Original non-special edition Star Wars Trilogy DVD's
Mr."I'm never going to release the non-special editions on dvd" caves into the prequel's sucking, and fan demand for Han shooting first. The original versions of Star wars, Empire strikes back, and Return of the Jedi with none of that digital effect stuff. I knew we held off buying that dvd boxset last year for a reason.
Stella Season 1
The Stella boys are old members of the comedy troupe 'The State'. We have their unedited, vulgar dvd of film shorts in the store but this is the TV show on Comedy Central they moved onto. Like their original short films, but less cursing, less 'prosthetic' parts, but equally bizarre. Cameos by Edward Norton, Sam Rockwell, and others.
I am a Sex Addict - Trailer
So if you look on our Criterion room wall, there is a huge painting. It has 4 scenes from Waking Life on it. One of the 4 scenes is a man who talks about 'holy moments' on film. That man's name is Caveh Zahedi, and he also has released this film, a mix of comedy, fiction, and fact.  Caveh, the director and lead actor of the film has a rather interesting problem; he is addicted to sex with prostitutes. The film is comprised of narrations re-telling the stories of his failed attempts to stop his addiction and the relationships that are destroyed as a result. Mixed in the narration is interview footage of Caveh just before his wedding (his third), where he narrates his struggle. He eventually finds recovery in a 12-step program, and finds a level of happiness.
The Maid

La Petite Jerusalem
A beautiful Jewish young woman still living with her orthodox family in a Parisian suburb, falls in love with a Muslim co-worker. Beautifully shot, won a screenwriting award at Cannes last year.
Jan Svankmaker: The Ossuary
The first of two Legendary Animators/avant garde filmmakers this month (Jiri Barta, the other), Svankmaker's film is A non-narrative voyage round Sedlec Ossuary, which has been constructed from over 50,000 human skeletons (victims of the Black Death). DVD also contains almost a dozen other shorts finding release for the first time.
Jiri Barta: Labyrinth of Darkness
Famed Czech animator Jiri Barta is responsible for a stunning array of dark gothic works that draw on the aesthetic traditions of Jan Svankmajer, Yuri Norstein, Franz Kafka, E.A. Poe, Fritz Lang, and the Brothers Quay. Slyly funny and frequently stocked with anti-consumerist themes, Barta's shorts are extraordinary encapsulations of imaginative worlds. This collection includes eight of Barta's most celebrated films: A Ballad About Green Wood (1983, 11 mins.), The Club of the Laid Off (1989, 25 mins.), The Design (1981, 6 mins.), Disc Jockey (1980, 10 mins.), The Last Theft (1987, 21 mins.), The Pied Piper of Hamelin (1985, 55 mins.), Riddles For a Candy (1978, 8 mins.), and The Vanished World of Gloves (1982, 16 mins.).
Masters of Horror: Dance of the Dead (Tobe Hooper - Poltergeist)
Tells a story of a angst ridden youth of America, brought on by a total disregard for human safety by those in power. A theme that's becoming more popular in the horror genre with Alexandre Aja's "The Hills Have Eyes" remake. There are no monsters here, save for the corrupted and corroded humanity of the characters.

The Proposition
Possibly the best Western made in the last decade, easily on our top 10 of the year. Written by musician extraordinaire Nick Cave, this Australian opus stars Guy Pearce, Danny Huston, Ray Winstone, and Emily Watson. A dark, uncompromising look at the beginnings of Australian colonization (frequent Aboriginal actor David Gulpilil [Last Wave, Walkabout] role as Jacko) and the proposition made to Guy Pearce's Charlie Burns to go after and kill his older brother Arthur in return for his younger brothers life. A MUST SEE.

The Devil and Daniel Johnston
Documentary favorite that follows the life of eccentric outsider musician Daniel Johnston through his battles with mental illness, creativity, and fame.
Hard Candy
You know all those internet predators? What if their prey turned the tables? One of the most disturbing movies made, a young girl lured into a meeting by an internet predator gets the last word, torturing and ultimately killing her would-be predator.

Advise and Consent
Otto Preminger directed film with a key starring role by Charles Laughton (Night of the Hunter). Robert Leffingwell is the president's candidate for Secretary of State. Prior to his approval, he must first go through a Senate investigation to determine if he's qualified. Leading the Senate committee is idealistic Senator Brig Anderson, who soon finds himself unprepared for the political dirt that's revealed, including Leffingwell's past affiliations with a Communist organization. When Leffingwell testifies about his political leanings, he proves his innocence. Later, however, Anderson learns that he lied under oath and even asks the president to withdraw Leffingwell for consideration, especially after the young senator begins receiving blackmail threats about a skeleton in his own closet.
Battlestar Galactica Season 2.5
The concluding half of Battlestar Galactica S. 2.1    I've been on pins and needles the whole time. Timed for the start of season 3 on the sci-fi channel. One of our favorites, great performances by Edward James Olmos and Mary Mcdonnel.

Jigoku (Criterion)
                 From criterion:
Shocking, outrageous, and poetic,
Jigoku (Hell, a.k.a. The Sinners of Hell) is the most innovative creation from Nobuo Nakagawa, the father of the Japanese horror film. After a young theology student flees a hit-and-run accident, he is plagued by both his own guilt-ridden conscience and a mysterious, diabolical doppelganger. But all possible escape routes lead straight to hell— literally. In the gloriously gory final third of the film, Nakagawa offers up his vision of the underworld in a tour de force of torture and degradation. A striking departure from traditional Japanese ghost stories, Jigoku, with its truly eye-popping (and -gouging) imagery, created aftershocks that are still reverberating in contemporary world horror cinema.
Spirit of the Beehive (Criterion)
                 From Criterion:
Criterion is proud to present Víctor Erice’s spellbinding
The Spirit of the Beehive (El espíritu de la colmena), widely regarded as the greatest Spanish film of the 1970s. In a small Castilian village in 1940, in the wake of the country's devastating civil war, six-year-old Ana attends a traveling movie show of Frankenstein and becomes possessed by the memory of it. Produced as Franco’s long regime was nearing its end, The Spirit of the Beehive is a bewitching portrait of a child’s haunted inner life and one of the most visually arresting movies ever made.

The Lake House (il mare)
A remake of the Asian film Il Mare, this version stars Keanu 'woah' Reeves and Sandra 'Speed 2' Bullock. Why can't US remakes ever live up to their originals?
Three Times
Considered a culminating work for director Hsiao-hsien Hou (Millenium Mambo, Cafe Lumiere), Three stories set in three times, 1911, 1966 and 2005. Two actors play the two main characters in each story. For fans of Wong Kar-Wai or Olivier Assayas.
Russian Dolls
The sequel to the Audrey Tautou film The Spanish Apartment. Five years after their summer together in Barcelona, Xavier, William, Wendy, Martine and Isabelle reunite.
The Education of Shelby Knox
Documentary from Docurama, A 15-year-old girl's transformation from conservative Southern Baptist to liberal Christian and ardent feminist parallels her fight for sex education and gay rights in Lubbock, Texas.
The Notorious Bettie Page
Played by Grethen Mol, this film tracks the life and career of the original pin up queen, Bettie Page.

Down in the Valley
Edward Norton and a built David Morse star. The classic theme of star crossed lovers, Norton plays a real cowboy courting Morse's young daughter, when the relationship escalates, and cowboy and father come to a shocking climax.
Masters of Horror: Imprint (Takashi Miike Unaired in the US)
So this never aired in the US as part of the original run of the series. That's because for anyone whose seen a single Miike film, he's simply $%^$$ up.
City of Men
A spin off Television show from Brazil based on and by the makers of City of God. The complete series is collected here.
The Ground Truth
Hailed as "powerful" and "quietly unflinching," Patricia Foulkrod's searing documentary feature includes exclusive footage that will stir audiences. The filmmaker's subjects are patriotic young Americans - ordinary men and women who heeded the call for military service in Iraq - as they experience recruitment and training, combat, homecoming, and the struggle to reintegrate with families and communities. The terrible conflict in Iraq, depicted with ferocious honesty in the film, is a prelude for the even more challenging battles fought by the soldiers returning home – with personal demons, an uncomprehending public, and an indifferent government.
